Woods, who is a 14-time major winner, has officially filed to enter the tournament following a steady performance at the Masters.
This year’s US Open takes place from June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island, where Tiger Woods made his US Open debut in 1995 as the US Amateur champion.
That year he made a 74 in the first round before withdrawing having suffered a wrist injury.
Woods has won the US Open three times with the last of these coming in 2008.
Indeed, that tournament at Torrey Pines was the last time 42-year-old Woods won a major tournament
Woods has still had to file for entry despite being exempt having won the tournament a decade ago.
The American has suffered a number of personal issues and injuries though returned to golf at the end of last year.
He was among the favourites to win the Masters, though eventually finished tied-32nd on one-over.
That was 16 shots behind winner Patrick Reed, and Woods will be hoping for a better performance in New York.
Woods finished in a tie for 17th the last time the tournament was held at Shinnecock Hills 14 years ago.
He has been in fine form in recent weeks though.
Woods’ steady Masters performance coming on the back of strong showings at the Valspar Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational.
